In a meeting in Lilongwe on 29 September 2016 the official launch took place of the new edition of the Chichewa Dictionary, published by Oxford University Press (OUP). The event was organised by OUP and its agent for Malawi Mrs Gaulphine Nyirenda of Maneno Books. To the speakers belonged Professor Pascal Kishindo of the Centre for Language Studies of the University of Malawi, Dr. Raphael Agabu the Director of the Inspectorate and Advisory Services of the Malawi Ministry of Education, whose speech was read by his Deputy Dr. Jennings Kayira. They emphasized that the book is a much needed tool for schools in Malawi and the whole of Chichewa speaking Africa. Apart from representatives of the Malawi associations of book publishers and booksellers, the clergy, NGO's and of the Press the launch was attended by the former Vice President of the Republic of Malawi the right honourable Dr. Justin Malewezi, who is a well-known advocate of the Chichewa heritage as a language and as a cultural phenomenon that extends beyond the boundaries of Malawi.
